Remember Segways, those two wheeled personal transportation vehicles that were all the rage for a short time a decade ago? I go into more specifics in my short book, "Where's My Website?" but for now, let's focus on just one aspect of how search engines work: Trust, or more technically, Citations.

Imagine you're looking for a local plumber. Do you just pick the first business name that pops up, or would you rather get a recommendation from a friend? Word of mouth is the best form of marketing ever, but let's say you don't have a referral. What else do we look for? Personally, I look for reviews from different sources like Google, Yelp, Angie's List, other blogs, testimonials, etc. I want to hire pros with a proven track record and not some shady fly-by-night operation. I tend to get the assurances I'm looking for from multiple sources – and so do search engines.

Search engines look for corroborating evidence, just like we do. We look for referrals to build trust. This trust evidence, or citations, are links, blog posts, ratings, reviews, blog mentions, etc., They help to give legitimacy to a website and make it worthy of higher ranking. Why would a search engine do that, you ask? Because search engines compete for our use and attention. Google, Bing, Yahoo, Ask and many others all compete against each other to be our search engine of choice. To be the best they need to provide the best search results for us. They do that with algorithms, spiders, and bots that constantly crawl the web to collect data, so that in a few milliseconds, they can deliver the most relevant results to us.

Who would you rather do business with if you have no other information: The business with just a basic website and nothing else, or a business with a sharp website and a recently updated blog, Facebook page with dozens of likes, a Google maps listing with 5-star ratings and reviews, Yelp reviews, listings on Bing and Yahoo, a Twitter feed, links from multiple directories, and a YouTube channel? Probably the later because you'll actually find his business online. The other guy will be lost in the digital abyss where no one bothers to search.

This is just one aspect of creating a web presence strategy that will get you found online. The Arizona Video Company had the distinct privilege of working on a book cover with the dynamically talented Dr. Crystal D. Gifford. According to her author page on Amazon.com: 

Since Dr. Gifford's previous book cover was light and airy, we took a more dramatic approach to this new cover (below). We used a heavier font with shadow effects against a dark background, and changed "MONEY" to a green with more green lighting surrounding it from behind. Then we stopped by the bank to pick up a layered stack of attention-getting $100 dollar bills which we placed under the subtitle and muted their presence just a bit. Money isn't everything, right? 

We decided on flat black for the back cover with white and green text. A more recent photo of Dr. Gifford was added along side her logo and ISBN information.
