The idea for our first trip came by way of email from Living Social to visit Esplendor Resort at Rio Rico, AZ. Both the deal and the pictures looked inviting, but because we'd earned a free night from Hotels.com, we decided to create our own deal instead and saved a few more bucks.
Rio Rico, AZ is about 40 minutes south of Tucson along Interstate 19, and a mere 15 minutes north of the border. Esplendor Resort is up on a hill overlooking the valley, offering views of the rolling hills and surrounding mountains. The Resort entrance was all Southwest Arizona complete with a saloon, restaurant, meeting rooms, and special event planning office. Our room was a bit of a walk away beyond a swimming pool, spa, outdoor celebration areas and palm trees. Many visitors come for the golfing. We thought the course was there on the grounds, but discovered it was a few miles away.

Saturday was devoted to our road trip. After breakfast in the restaurant, we drove south to Nogales, then turned NE to take in Tombstone, Bisbee, Sierra Vista then back to Rio Rico. We were pelted with high winds and rain the entire way but still had a great time. We're planning another trip specifically to Bisbee later this year.
To summarize our visit at the Esplendor Resort: It was a very nice experience overall. To be more specific, the Resort itself looked as though it had seen better days, in all candor. It's more rustic and functional than fancy. Our room was about $70 per night so it won't compare to the El Presidente suite, but we weren't planning to spend much time in our room anyway. We rated the food at a 3 out of 5, but the service was 5 out of 5.
Esplendor Resort at Rio Rico, AZ, was a nice base from which to travel out to other places from. Would we stay again? We would, if we intended to hang out near Rio Rico. It looks like a wonderful place to have a wedding, special event or to do some golfing.
