As a freelance video producer, I had to learn the art of marketing myself online. People find the Arizona Video Company on Google, but I also post to Craigslist and stay connected to referral groups like the Professional Business Network.
How Thumbtack.com Works
For the freelancer like myself, it's an additional stream of work. Project notifications are emailed out to us and we have the option to bid or pass.
Thumbtack.com is free to sign up. There are no monthly fees (Hallelujah!) but to bid on a project you must purchase credits. Each project has it's own credit cost, usually between 2-5 credits. The more credits you purchase in bulk as a package, the lower the cost per credit. The credits don't expire.
One problem I've had a few times is with project descriptions from employers. Sometimes you need more information about a project to know if you're the right fit. Occasionally my questions have been rejected and not forwarded to the employer. That's irritating because bidding costs money and I don't want to bid on something I don't have the right equipment for. They've improved the question-answer system so that's not the problem it used to be.
